Types of lifting magnets

There are two main types of lifting magnets:

• Permanent Magnets: Magnets that use permanently-magnetised materials – such as alnico and ferrites – to generate the magnetic field. They’re commonly controlled using a lever. 

• Electromagnets: Magnets that are charged with electricity. They use a charged coil wrapped around a steel core to orient particles within ferrous materials in a common direction. Electromagnets require the use of a rectifier to operate. 

Permanent magnets are best-suited to working environments in which electricity is not easily accessed, or where there’s a high chance of power failure. 

Conversely, electromagnets are preferred in well-equipped working environments where varying magnet strength & more accurate lifting execution is required. 

How to use a lifting magnet

To get started, move the magnet to the required lifting position. Once the magnet is in place, ensure the lifting path is free of debris and move away from the magnet to ensure your safety during the lift. 

Once you’re a safe distance away, switch the magnet on and execute the lift, being sure to move the load at a slow and steady pace. 

Once the lift has been completed, release the load by switching the magnet off.
