What is proof load testing?

Proof load testing is an exercise to ensure that lifting equipment can safely perform to the necessary British or European Standard in accordance with guidance from the manufacturer. Proof load testing is executed by performing a test lift at the item’s maximum load capacity. 

Proof load testing ensures full regulatory compliance while adequately safeguarding your team.

When is proof load testing required?

Proof load testing is required following the manufacture, repair or installation of any lifting equipment to ensure it meets the required standards before being brought into service. 

Situations in which an item of lifting equipment may require proof load testing include:

• Following its manufacture
• Following an upgrade or repair
• Periodically in accordance with guidance from the relevant British or European Standards
• Following a malfunction or safety incident

Any form of lifting equipment requires a robust proof load test prior to being brought into service. However, common items include:
